Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm: Match Preview and Predictions
Friday night at CommBank Stadium shapes as a big one. Kick-off is set for 8:00 pm in Sydney, which is 10:00 pm in New Zealand.
This shapes as one of the biggest games of the young season. Both sides have already shown they belong among the contenders.
Penrith Panthers
Penrith head toward this clash looking cold-blooded again. They started 2026 with wins over Brisbane, Cronulla and the Roosters.
The most recent one was a brutal 40-4 result at Allianz Stadium. Nathan Cleary has looked in command, and the Panthers have conceded only 10 points in three games.
Their backline is also flying, with Brian To’o and Thomas Jenkins finishing strongly.
There is also very little panic around Penrith right now. Liam Martin is back in the starting side for Round 4.
Jack Cogger returns to the bench after a concussion, while Izack Tago continues to push for a regular spot—underlining the depth in this squad.
The Panthers look balanced, fresh and very hard to break down.
Melbourne Storm
Melbourne still look dangerous, but their build-up hasn’t been as smooth.
They opened the season by hammering Parramatta 52–4, then did enough to beat the Dragons. But in Round 3, they let a 14–0 lead slip and lost 18–14 to Brisbane at AAMI Park.
That result won’t have pleased Craig Bellamy.
The Storm still have plenty to trouble any opponent. Harry Grant, Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes can flip a game in minutes.
Sua Fa’alogo has also added real spark at the back. Trent Loiero is back starting at lock for Round 4, which gives them more control through the middle.
But Melbourne have not looked quite as ruthless as Penrith so far.
Recent history makes this even more interesting. Melbourne beat Penrith early last season in the grand final rematch.
They also edged them again later in 2025 in a tight contest. So Penrith will not be short of motivation here. This feels like a match they will desperately want to own.
So, who are we backing here?

Prediction for Panthers vs Storm
This should be close, tense and high quality. Melbourne have the class to stay in the fight all night. But
Penrith look slightly more settled, and their defence has been far cleaner. They also seem to control momentum better when matches get tight. That could be the difference in a contest like this.
Our bet is firmly on the Panthers to win. The Storm should make them work for every point. Still, Penrith look more likely to own the key moments at home.
A Panthers win by 4 to 8 points.
