Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors: Preview & Prediction
McDonald Jones Stadium should have a real edge to it on Saturday. The match starts at 3:00 pm in Newcastle and 5:00 pm in New Zealand.
It feels like one of those games that could swing on momentum and nerve.
Newcastle Knights
The Knights have shown promising signs early in 2026. They opened the season with a win over the Cowboys in Las Vegas.
That result mattered after a rough 2025. Kalyn Ponga looked sharp, and the new spine had some spark.
But they have already had to juggle things after Fletcher Sharpe hurt his knee. Sandon Smith was then asked to step in at five-eighth for Round 2.
That is why Newcastle still feel a little hard to read. There is talent on this side. Ponga can change any match in a few touches.
Dylan Brown also gives them more control than they had last year. Still, the combinations are fresh, and that can show late in tight games.
New Zealand Warriors
The Warriors look more settled right now. They smashed the Roosters 42-18 to open the season and looked powerful through the middle.
James Fisher-Harris and Jackson Ford set the tone. Tanah Boyd also handled the game well at halfback. Andrew Webster kept the same 19-man squad for Round 2, which says plenty about where the team is at.
There are still a few issues around the Warriors squad. Marata Niukore was still trying to return from a calf injury ahead of Round 2.
Luke Metcalf is also still working back from an ACL injury. Even so, they already look physical, balanced and confident. That is a dangerous mix this early in the year.
The Warriors should also take belief from recent history. They beat Newcastle the last time these sides met in Auckland in 2025.
That does not decide this one, but it adds another layer of confidence.
So, who are we backing here?

Prediction for Knights vs Warriors
This looks close, but the Warriors seem a touch more reliable. Their pack is rolling, and their structure already looks cleaner.
The Knights should stay in the fight at home. Ponga alone gives them a real chance. But over 80 minutes, the Warriors look more likely to control the key moments. Our bet is on the New Zealand Warriors to win.
It may not be a blowout. Newcastle should make them work for it. But the Warriors look better equipped to finish stronger.
Warriors win by 4 to 8 points.
